Senior Living Health Tips

Staying healthy is always important at any age. It’s simple to keep your health in check. Here are a few tips for healthy living in senior living communities.

Health is always important but especially in the golden years of life. Staying healthy in senior living communities is a breeze and is highly encouraged. Nobody enjoys being sick and being unhealthy can lead to many complications later down the line. As we get older the people around us become more worried about health. Doing simple things to keep our health in check can help us feel like age is just a number. Here are a few tips on staying healthy in your retirement community.

Check Ups are Important

Don’t skip out on check ups. Check ups can be very important in preventative care and senior living facilities encourage you to attend them. Try to have yearly checkups on your dental hygiene, vision, and hearing. Risk for cavities increases as we get older and seniors with the correct prescription for their eyeglasses have a reduced risk of falling. Keeping our bodies running in tiptop shape for many years to come starts with getting annual check ups.

Keep Drinking Water

As our bodies age, we sometimes have the tendency to relinquish our thirst cravings, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still need water. Drinking lots of water is very beneficial to your body (and skin!). Becoming dehydrated can cause problems with memory and concentration and can even put you at an increased risk of falling. The list of benefits from drinking water goes on and on.

Always Bring a Sweater

As the seasons change your wardrobe should too. Always dress appropriately for whatever weather conditions are occurring. If it’s a little chilly outside you might want to throw on a light jacket or a sweater. On the more sunny days, protect your eyes with sunglasses or a hat with a large visor. The weather can have a huge impact on your health whether it be too hot or too cold. Dressing appropriately can help deter colds.

Challenge Yourself

People with senior living careers can tell us that mental health is key in staying healthy as well. Stimulate your mind by completing challenging crosswords and other word or number games. Reading your favorite book is also an easy way to keep your mind engaged. Join clubs within the retirement community. Hang around people you enjoy spending time with while chatting. Doing things that make you genuinely happy and trying new things can keep your mind sharp.

Go for a Walk

Lace up your walking shoes and take a stroll around the beautiful retirement community. Make sure your shoes fit properly and offer a lot of support. Going for a walk at least once a day can improve your physical health and make you feel better all around. A body in motion stays in motion. Walking exercises our muscles and joints to ensure they continue functioning to the best of their ability. Many retirement communities have beautiful walking trails for all to enjoy.
